Take a look at the picture of this cake. Looks good, right? However, it didn’t taste as good as it looks.
Well, at least I didn’t bake the actual cake. The foundation of the cake are ladyfingers and it is frosted with chocolate sour cream frosting. It is topped with chocolate shavings. I made the shavings by using a vegetable peeler. The shavings look great – much better than just grating chocolate with a grater.

So, to sum up, the ladyfingers were great. The chocolate shavings were great and they looked great. The sour cream chocolate frosting is where I went wrong.
Making of the frosting was rather simple. Since I don’t bake a lot, when I do bake, I look for simple recipes and ideas. After reviewing a ton of sour cream chocolate frosting recipes, I liked the idea where you make chocolate ganache first, and then fold sour cream into it. I like to make chocolate ganache – a tablespoon of ganache makes a great snack 🙂 So off I went to make ganache and then sour cream frosting.
Ganache turned out great – when you combine chocolate, butter, cream and sugar, you get something good, right? Folding of the sour cream worked great as well. The frosting had the right color and the right consistency. Everything was great except, ummm, taste.
It tasted way too tangy. Way too tangy and way too sour. And I love sour cream and use it a lot in cooking – see Cucumber salad, Spring Radish Salad, Wedge Salad. The sour cream tang that I love in salads turned out to be not so great in the frosting for a cake.
So there you have it. If you have a good recipe for chocolate sour cream frosting, please post it. And read a note in this post about a fabulous flourless chocolate cake.
