A lot of people ask:
What Is A Porterhouse Steak?
A Porterhouse is actually one of the best steaks you can get! Given the choice between Porterhouse steak and almost any other steak, I usually choose Porterhouse.
Why is that? This is because the Porterhouse steak is the best of both worlds, as it is two streaks in one. On one side of the Porterhouse steak, is the filet steak. Filet mignon is the most tender steak that you can buy. The other side of the Porterhouse steak is the bigger strip steak. Strip steak is not as tender as the filet, but it is still tender, delicious and more meaty. In fact, a lot of people prefer the strip steak over the filet because of the flavor.
The steaks are separated by a t bone, and you can always tell which steak is which, as the filet steak is the smaller one, and the strip steak is the bigger one.
And now, if anyone asks you, what is a Porterhouse steak, you will be able to provide the correct answer!
Is A Porterhouse The Same As T Bone?
Here is another popular question that I get about Porterhouse steak, is a Porterhouse the same as T Bone steak? The answer is no, it is not.
While the cut is similar, and the t bone steak has the same t bone as the Porterhouse steak does, the t bone steak does not contain any filet steak in it. The t bone steak only contains the t bone and a strip steak, it does not have any meat on the other side of the t bone.
Porterhouse Vs Ribeye and Sirloin
And what about Porterhouse vs Ribeye, which steak is better? That really depends on which type of steak you prefer. To me it is a really tough call, as I like both steaks. Both have the delicious meaty flavor, the ribeye is very flavorful, and the strip steak side of the Porterhouse steak has a ton of flavor. But as Porterhouse also has a filet side, it gets a nod because of the two distinct steaks it consists of.
And what about Porterhouse steak and sirloin steak, as a lot of people wonder are porterhouse and sirloin steaks the same? They are definitely not the same steaks, and in this particular match up I will still prefer the Porterhouse steak.
Tips For Cooking A Porterhouse Steak
– Take the Porterhouse Steak our of the fridge about 20 minutes before you start cooking. It will cook better and more evenly, if it is not cold.
– Use salt and pepper to flavor Porterhouse Steak A good steak does not need much, it speaks for itself. Salt and pepper will enhance the flavor and make your steak even more delicious!
– Cook Porterhouse steak in oven, after you sear it in a pan first! Cooking it in the oven will cook the steak to the correct temperature, and searing it first will give it that seared restaurant look.
– Use a meat thermometer, to make sure that your steak is cooked to a particular temperature.
– Let the Porterhouse Steak rest, before you cut into it. The biggest mistake that all the people new to cooking steak make, is that they cut the steak before they should. Make sure that your steak rests on a cutting board for at least 10 minutes, before you cut it.
How To Cut A Porterhouse Steak
Cut the Porterhouse Steak before serving Once Porterhouse steak rests, and it is time to serve the steak, cut it before serving. A whole steak is way too big of a portion, and not too many people will be able to finish it. And, Porterhouse Steaks are pretty expensive, so you definitely do not want to waste any of it.
Here is how to cut the Porterhouse steak. Cut out the filet and cut out the NY strip steak of the t bone. Slice the filet across the grain, and slice the NY strip steak across the grain.
On a cutting board or a serving platter, arrange the t bones and then arrange the sliced filets and sliced NY strip steaks around them.
This makes for a great presentation, and ensures that everyone gets exactly the amount of steak they want!
